Start with the airline deadline
Your airline controls check-in, bag-drop and boarding cut-offs. Use those hard deadlines first, then add airport movement and screening time. A generic “two hours” rule is less useful than knowing the exact moment your bag-drop closes.
Confirm the terminal before leaving
JFK is a multi-terminal airport. A wrong-terminal arrival can add AirTrain travel plus another walk. Confirm the operating terminal in your airline app and compare it with the official airport flight board before you leave for the airport.
Add time for screening or assistance
If you need TSA Cares, mobility assistance, document checks or oversized baggage handling, treat those as separate steps in the timeline. Pre-booked assistance can make the process smoother, but it should not be treated as zero-time.
Use live information on travel day
Road traffic, AirTrain service, terminal construction and airline operations can change. Re-check the official airport board and your airline before departure rather than relying on an article written days or weeks earlier.
Official sources
The Airport Board uses airport or transport-operator sources for operational facts. Re-check time-sensitive information on travel day.
